The upcoming conference on the Evolving Workplace presents new and original research based on data from the Workplace and Employee Survey (WES), which contains panel data on the same workplaces since 1999. Such longitudinal data allow researchers to examine changes in workplace practices and outcomes over a number of years. The survey is unique also in that employers and employees are linked at the micro-data level: employees are selected from within sampled workplaces.
The analyses presented at this conference by a series of speakers from academia and federal government departments reveal a new and updated portrait of workplaces in Canada. These findings also provide some guidance for policymakers who may be contemplating changes in workplace policies such as training, employee involvement, variable pay, flexible staffing and flexible work organization, among other practices. Researchers and policymakers from business, labour, government and other organizations will find it useful to learn about the WES in general and about workplace topics covered by the papers at this conference, in particular.
